Most of our breakfasts are quite quick since someone is always trying to get out the door. But on weekends or days without school or work we’ll have a more leisurely breakfast. Pancakes are often requested. Due to cost, we very rarely have maple syrup with our pancakes. Sometimes I’ll make Buttermilk Syrup but [...]

Once in a while I like to do something slightly different than our regular sourdough bread, such as Swirl Bread or Swirl Rolls.
Cinnamon swirl bread is super popular with my little boy. It is takes only a few extra minutes to turn our Minimal Knead Sourdough Sandwich Bread into a swirl loaf. My bread [...]

At my house red beans is an all encompassing term for any red bean (I know, obvious). These could be the large red kidney beans or smaller red beans. I tend to alternate on which I purchase. I’ve also found that other than size there is not a huge amount of difference in the beans. [...]

Homemade broth is an important part of a real/whole/traditional foods diet. Making broth was one of the first things I started doing when we began to transition to real foods. The homemade broth is wonderful for making soups, cooking beans, making sauces, etc. Broth is a protein sparer which allows you to consume small amounts [...]

My girls have always loved french toast. When we switched to real/whole/traditional foods over 3 years ago, french toast was an easy food to convert to real foods. Using eggs from free-range chickens and real milk along with sourdough bread makes a terrific breakfast/brunch or even quick dinner.
Topping the sourdough french toast [...]

While we were on our family vacation this summer we ate out at Chipotle’s. We each had a huge stuffed burrito and while dining Joe said we should eat more burritos. I was surprised by that since we often have some sort of burrito, taco or tostado as part of our Stretchy Bean dishes.
My [...]

It has been an interesting few weeks! With work, a minor kitchen re-do, a new job for Kiki, getting ready for back to school and a few health issues (mine- I’ll share more later but it is nothing “serious”) I’ve struggled to keep my head above water. My meal planning has also suffered the past [...]

So we lasted a total of 6 days on GAPS Intro. We knew from the beginning that it was possible we wouldn’t be able to do the entire Intro process so our back up plan was to do Intro as best we could and then go into full GAPS. Last night we determined it was [...]
By Millie, on July 31st, 2012 I wanted to have a record of how GAPS Introduction progressed for us. I think it would be helpful for me to have something to look back on and also for others considering doing GAPS Intro. But I don’t want to have GAPS posts completely take over the blog. I’ve decided to keep a running [...]

“All disease begins in the gut” Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine.
Today is Day 1 of GAPS Introduction at my house. The GAPS diet is from the book Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride.
Introduction is a 6 Stage diet that starts with very limited foods and gradually adds [...]

After a summer filled with travel and lots of discussion my family is going to start on GAPS Intro. Last October my husband, Joe, and I did GAPS. The GAPS diet is based on the book Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD. The GAPS goal then was to help me with some issues [...]
By Millie, on July 10th, 2012 We are back in Wyoming after our surprise trip down to Oklahoma. The children and I were down there for a week and then my husband came down along with my sister and her family. We all drove home on Saturday choosing to drive ‘straight-thru’ arriving home around 4AM on Sunday.
This 10 day trip [...]

Real Food Hits the Road is the latest installment to the series Someone Else’s Shoes. The purpose of this experience was to see if we could follow our usual 85% real food eating while on the road. We are now home from being on the road the evening of June 1 [...]

One thing that I used to do on this blog was share a weekly menu plan. I stopped doing it some time ago but lately have been thinking of returning to sharing a weekly menu plan at least temporarily. One question that is often asked of me in ‘real life’ is “what do you eat”. [...]
