“Then the phone call came. One cold February afternoon, Jeff called to tell me his company did a 20% pay cut across the board. Two months later, it was a 20% reduction in hours on top of that pay cut. Just one month later, I got another afternoon phone call. They had laid almost everyone off. Jeff was now among the unemployed. Other companies in his field across the city did the same thing that same month. His industry was gutted and he knew very few in his field with employment. Things looked grim.”
Jeff and KerryAnn Foster ended up going through eleven long months of unemployment. During that eleven months they spent under $100 each month on food for their family of four by mainly eating out of their food storage. They had stored their food based on their specific dietary needs. Real Food Storage: How To’s & Recipes by KerryAnn Foster (that’s an affiliate link) was the result of their experience. If you are starting your real food storage program, you need this book. If you are in the middle of your real food storage program and stalled, you need this book. If you have a fully stocked pantry, you still need this book for all of the awesome recipes.
KerryAnn takes you step by step through what to store, how to organize it, and the foods to make from your stored items.

I especially appreciated the recommendations for the amounts to store per person. She breaks it down by category and provides a simple formula to determine the appropriate amounts for your family size based on gender and ages. The entire How To section is designed to help you make your food storage fit your life. This is not set up as a one-size-fits-all food storage plan.
The recipe section is great. I made a few of the dishes out of it and they were hits. I especially love Pa’s Favorite No-Bake Cookies. They were delicious!
After that 11 months of unemployment, KerryAnn and family once again used the principles outlined in this book to restock their pantry. Which they needed to rely on once again during another round of unemployment. Food storage can make a huge difference during times when money is tight. For my family, we look at food storage as a form of insurance or ‘money in the bank’. Not having to buy food during times of financial difficulty can be a huge relief.

I’ve been trying to learn more about preparing for those unexpected rainy days, especially because we live in FL, I’d rather have that peace of mind of having food stored away for my family than doing the mad rush to the stores like everyone else when we have a hurricane coming!

Looking forward to gleaning more ideas for adding to our pantry stock. It seems it is getting to be a bigger challenge all the time with dietary restrictions in our family and increasing costs!
As relatively new homesteaders, we would love to have a copy of this book! Our canning and preserving has us overflowing with yummy food from our poultry and vegetable garden. Hoping we can add some of the trickier, typically store-bought items to our storage this year.
Thanks for a great giveaway!
As the wife of a newly unemployed husband (we knew it was coming & have been planning) as well as an aspiring homesteader, this book is certainly a resource I would love to have.
I hope to learn how to preserve meat and organize myself better.
This looks like fantastic book. The best way to learn food storage is to learn it from someone that has lived it. This lady definitely has first hand experience. Can’t wait to get my hands on this book.
