“Then the phone call came. One cold February afternoon, Jeff called to tell me his company did a 20% pay cut across the board. Two months later, it was a 20% reduction in hours on top of that pay cut.  Just one month later, I got another afternoon phone call.  They had laid almost everyone off.  Jeff was now among the unemployed.  Other companies in his field across the city did the same thing that same month. His industry was gutted and he knew very few in his field with employment. Things looked grim.”

Jeff and KerryAnn Foster ended up going through eleven long months of unemployment.  During that eleven months they spent under $100 each month on food for their family of four by mainly eating out of their food storage.  They had stored their food based on their specific dietary needs.  Real Food Storage: How To’s & Recipes by KerryAnn Foster (that’s an affiliate link) was the result of their experience.  If you are starting your real food storage program, you need this book.  If you are in the middle of your real food storage program and stalled, you need this book. If you have a fully stocked pantry, you still need this book for all of the awesome recipes.

I especially appreciated the recommendations for the amounts to store per person.  She breaks it down by category and provides a simple formula to determine the appropriate amounts for your family size based on gender and ages.  The entire How To section is designed to help you make your food storage fit your life.  This is not set up as a one-size-fits-all food storage plan.

The recipe section is great. I made a few of the dishes out of it and they were hits. I especially love Pa’s Favorite No-Bake Cookies. They were delicious!

After that 11 months of unemployment, KerryAnn and family once again used the principles outlined in this book to restock their pantry.  Which they needed to rely on once again during another round of unemployment. Food storage can make a huge difference during times when money is tight.  For my family, we look at food storage as a form of insurance or ‘money in the bank’. Not having to buy food during times of financial difficulty can be a huge relief.
